We have all heard the phrase “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend”, right? Well, have you heard that they can also teach us something about how to be Earth’s best friend? Let me explain. The Diamond is the birthstone of the month of April. April is also the month we celebrate Earth Day. And how do most people celebrate Earth Day? Making others aware of what we can do for our Earth by taking action and cleaning our environment. And the first thing that we can do is RECYCLE! One simple act can make a huge difference in our environment. And what does this have to do with Diamonds? Did you know that some diamonds are composed of carbon, that is recycled organic matter, previously incorporated in marine organisms? And every copper wire in your computer, television, and house has been shaped with a device made with diamonds that squeezes wire to the desired diameter? .The Earth’s natural cycle involves recycling, renewing and creating. And we are called to do our part. Even the Pope’s message for the World Day of Peace was “To Cultivate Peace, Protect Creation”. So go be like a diamond to the Earth.

Todas hemos escuchado la frase que dice “Los Diamantes son los mejores amigos de la mujer”, ¿verdad? Bueno, ¿pues han también escuchado que los diamantes nos pueden ensenar algo de ser las mejores amigas de la tierra? Déjenme explicar. El Diamante es la piedra para el mes de Abril. En el mes de Abril también se celebra el “Día de la Tierra”. ¿Y cómo pasa la mayoría de gente celebrando este día? Pues haciendo a más gente conscientes de lo que podemos hacer para la tierra tomando acción y limpiando nuestro ambiente. ¿Y que tiene que ver esto con los Diamantes? ¿Sabías que algunos Diamantes están compuestos de carbón, que es materia orgánica reciclada, previamente incorporada en organismos marinos? ¿Y que todos los alambres de cobre en tu computadora, televisión y casa han sido formados con un aparato hecho con diamantes que forma los alambres al diámetro deseado? El proceso natural de la tierra es todo sobre reciclar, renovar y crear. Y todos estamos llamados a hacer lo mismo. Hasta el mensaje del Papa para el Día Mundial de la Paz fue “Para Cultivar Paz, Protege la Creación”. Así que vámonos a ser diamantes para nuestra Tierra!

The aquamarine is a gemstone as eternal as the sky and the sea, the colors that it mirrors. Its name comes from the Latin word “aqua” meaning water, and “mare” meaning sea. According to legend, the aquamarines came from the treasure chests of mermaids, and many sailors wore them for protection and to keep away seasickness. Many people believed that the aquamarine gifted its wearers with courage and feelings of happiness. The color blue has always been known to invoke feelings of trust, harmony and sympathy. It is said that these gems had healing powers. Many healers used them throughout history to help with ailments such as arthritis, eye inflammation and sore throats. These gems were also said to reflect the cosmos. In astrology the aquamarine is assigned to the planet Neptune, which name is taken from the God of the Sea.
The aquamarine gemstone became the official March birthstone in 1912. Women all over the world love this stone for its ability to complement any shade of skin or eye color. Because this stone ranges in color from an almost colorless blue to a darker blue/green or teal shade, it makes the perfect accessory to almost anything and anyone. With a color range this vast, it’s no wonder designers call it their favorite gemstone. The most popular shades of this blue can be found in the mines of Brazil. One of the rarest and most intense of these blues originates from the Santa Maria de Itabira mine in Brazil, a blue that they have most adequately titled the “Santa Maria”. Similar shades can be found in certain mines in Africa, but showing how important Brazil is to the mining of aquamarines, they are simply titled the “Santa Maria Africana”. Another shade of blue that comes from the mines in Brazil is titled the “Espiritu Santo”, and even another beautiful shade was named after the Brazilian beauty queen of 1954, “Martha Rocha”. Maybe showing us that we, women, are as beautiful as gems.



La aguamarina es una gema tan eterna como el cielo y el mar, los colores que refleja. Su nombre proviene de la palabra latina "aqua" que significa agua y la palabra “mare” que significa mar. La gema aguamarina se convirtió en la piedra oficial del mes marzo en 1912.
