I am a long way from home but I have the pleasure of living in Edinburgh at the moment. I love this city, with it’s streets steeped in history and a thriving cultural scene, the City of Edinburgh offers the perfect balance between all things traditional and contemporary.

Estoy bastante lejos de mi país, pero tengo el privilegio de vivir en Edinburgh en estos momentos. Me encanta la ciudad, con sus calles llenas de historia y su gran escena cultural, la Ciudad de Edinburgh ofrece el perfecto balance entre lo tradicional y lo contemporáneo.

Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is situated on Scotland's East Coast on the south side of the Firth Of Forth. Home of the Scottish parliament, Edinburgh is enriched with culture, fine architecture and hosts of one of the most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom, The University of Edinburgh (were my husband works). The most well known attractions are Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, the Holyrood Palace and The National Gallery of Scotland. Edinburgh is Scotland's second largest city after Glasgow.

Edinburgh, capital de Escocia, esta situada en la costa este de Escocia en el lado sur de Firth of Forth. Como cede del Parlamento Escocés, Edinburgh es rica en cultura, arquitectura y ofrece una de las universidades mas prestigiosas del Reino Unido, la Universidad de Edinburgo (donde trabaja mi esposo). Las atracciones mas populares de Edinburgh son el Castillo de Edinburgh, la Royal Mile, el Palacio Holyrood y la Galería Nacional de Escocia. Edinburgh es la segunda ciudad mas grande de Escocia después de Glasgow.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site at the heart of the city combines the medieval Old Town, the Georgian New Town and award winning modern architecture.

The historical centre of Edinburgh is divided into two parts by the Gardens of Princes Street. These gardens were originally marshlands. To the south of these gardens is the old city, dominated by the world famous Edinburgh castle, situated on an extinct volcano. The castle looks down on the shopping district of the city, Princes Street. To the north of the gardens is the New city where you will find modern architecture such as the Scottish parliament buildings and The National Gallery of Scotland. To the west of the castle is the financial district, where the banks and insurance companies fuel the hub of Edinburgh's economy. The West of the city is also home to Edinburgh Zoo.

El centro histórico de la ciudad esta dividida en dos partes por los Jardines de Princess Street. Estos jardines era originalmente pantanales. Hacia el sur de estos jardines esta la vieja ciudad (Old Town), dominada por el famoso Castillo de Edinburgh, situado en un volcán extinto. El castillo mira sobre el distrito comercial de la ciudad, Princess Street. Hacia el norte de los jardines esta la nueva ciudad, (New Town) donde puedes encontrar edificaciones de arquitectura moderna como el Parlamento Escocés y la Galería Nacional de Escocia. Hacia el oeste del castillo encontramos el distrito financiero, donde los bancos y compañías de seguro abastecen el eje de la economía de la ciudad. El oeste de la ciudad también es hogar del Zoológico de Edinburgh.

Each summer, the city comes alive with one of the world's largest festivals, the Edinburgh Festival. The three week long event held in August is enjoyed by nearly a million people each year and boasts of wealth of cultural delights including art, theatre, opera, music and dance as well as the traditional Military Tattoo. The cities streets are filled again for the world famous street party, Hogmanay. These New Year's celebrations in Edinburgh take place from December 31 until January 2.

Cada verano, la ciudad se llena de vida con uno de los festivales mas famosos del mundo, el Edinburgh Festival. El evento de 3 semanas se lleva a cabo en agosto, con sus alardes de riqueza de delicias culturales incluyendo arte, teatro, opera, música y baile, así como también el tradicional desfile militar Tattoo. Las calles de la ciudad se vuelven a llenar para la famosa fiesta de calle, Hogmanay. Estas celebraciones de año nuevo toman lugar del 31 de Diciembre al 2 de Enero.

In most recycling centers, products are considered contaminated when they have food residue in them, and these are then thrown out to the trash! If we have made the effort to separate our reciclables, let´s make an extra effort and clean our containers from food remnants, that way they won´t end up in the trash (because that is what we are trying to avoid!)

En la mayoría de centros de reciclaje, los productos son considerados contaminados si traen residuos de comida, y estos son luego tirados a la basura! Si ya hemos hecho el esfuerzo de separar nuestros reciclables, hagamos el esfuerzo extra de limpiar los contenedores de restos de comida, de esta forma no terminaran en la basura (pues eso es lo que queremos evitar!)

Peridot is a beautiful green olivine stone. The color of most gems is caused by traces of other elements but the color of peridot is an integral part of its structure. Peridot is found in the rocks created by volcanoes and even in meteors that fall to earth. Peridot is formed deep within the earth under tremendous heat and pressure. Peridot, the birthstone for August, has a hardness of 6.5, which is harder than metal but softer than many gems.

El peridoto es una piedra preciosa de color verde olivo. El color de la mayoria de las gemas es causado por residuos de otros elementos pero el color de el peridoto es una parte integral de su estructura. El peridoto se encuentra en las rocas creadas por volcanes y hasta en meteoritos que caen en la tierra. El peridoto se forma en las profundides de la tierra a muy altas temperaturas y presion. Peridot is perhaps derived from the French word peritot which means unclear, probably due to the inclusions and cloudy nature of large stones. It could also be named from the Arabic word faridat which means gem. In either case, peridot has been mined as a gemstone for an estimated four thousand years or better.

The ancient Romans called peridot "evening emerald," since its green color did not darken at night but was still visible by lamplight. Peridot was mined in ancient Egypt on an island called Zeberget. Fine large peridot are found in Burma and large quantities of peridot are also mined in China. Today most peridot is mined, often by hand, by Native Americans on the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona.

Los antiguos romanos llamaban al peridoto “Esmeralda de la noche” ya que su color verde no se oscurecia en la noche pero era visible a traves de la luz de una lámpara. El peridoto se extraia en la antigua Egipto en una isla llamada Zerberget. Largos y finos peridotos se encuentran en Burma y mayores cantidades se extraen en China. Hoy en dia la mayoria de los peridotos se extraen mayormente a mano por americanos nativos en la reservación San Carlos de Arizona.

Pearls have been praised for their beauty and rarity for more than four thousand years and many centuries ago. From ancient China, India, and Egypt, to Imperial Rome, to the Arab world, to Native American tribes, cultures from around the world and throughout recorded history have valued pearls longer than any other gem. Pearls have been used as symbol of power and wealth and social status. Women have worn pearls as jewelry and as accessories decorating their dresses and creating fashion statements with pearls.

Las perlas han sido admiradas por su belleza y rareza por mas de cuatromil anos y muchas siglos atras. Desde la antigua China ,India y Egypto hasta el imperio de Roma, el mundo arabe y tambien las tribus de America, las culturas del mundo han valorado las perlas mas tiempo que cualquier otra gema. Las perlas han sido vistas como un simbolo de poder, riqueza y estatus social.Las mujeres han usado perlas en joyeria y como accesorios, decorando vestidos con estas y creando patrones de modas.

There are two types of pearls. Natural pearls and cultured or freshwater pearls. A natural pearl is a hard object produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. To defend it, layer after layer of a substance called nacre grow and form like onionskins around the particle. Most natural pearls are irregularly shaped. Cultured pearls were created when in the early part of the 20th century; Japanese researchers discovered a method of producing pearls artificially. Essentially, the method involves inserting a foreign substance, or nucleus, into the tissue of the oyster or mollusk, then returning it to the sea, allowing a cultured pearl to develop naturally. Nowadays, cultured pearls come in different colors, sizes and shapes.

Existen dos tipos de perlas; las perlas naturales y las perlas cultivadas o perlas de rio.Una perla natural es un objeto duro producido dentro del tejido suave( especificamente el manto) de un la coraza de un molusco viviente. Para defenderla capa tras capade una substancia llamada nacar crece se forma similar a la piel de la cebolla alrededor de la particula. La mayoria de las perlas naturales tienen una forma irregular. Las perlas cultivadas fueron creadas a comienzos del siglo XX, científicos japonés descubrieron un método que producía las perlas artificialmente. Esencialmente el método consiste en insertar una sustancia ajena o núcleo en el tejido de la ostra o molusco, y después regresarla al mar dejando que la perla se produzca naturalmente.

En estos días, las perlas cultivadas vienen en diferentes colores, tamaños y formas.
